Client Alert: Volterra Fietta promotes Angela Ha to Counsel

Top-ranked public international law specialist firm Volterra Fietta is pleased to announce the promotion of Angela Ha to counsel, effective as of 1 November 2022.

Since joining in 2016, Angela has worked for the firm’s clients across the full range of public international law, including land and maritime boundary disputes, international human rights, the law of the sea, international investment law, sovereign immunities and the laws of war.  She has represented clients in multiple State-to-State disputes, including cases before the International Court of Justice.  She has gained a stellar reputation acting for both claimants and respondents in high-stakes, high-profile investment treaty arbitrations.  She also has significant experience advising clients in judicial proceedings involving public international law issues before domestic courts.

As well as being a successful practitioner, Angela enjoys academic recognition.  She frequently speaks and publishes on a variety of public international law topics.  She lectures at leading universities, most recently at University College London and SOAS University of London.  Just last month, Angela spoke at a conference at the United Nations on the peaceful settlement of international disputes.

Commenting on her promotion, Volterra Fietta partner Robert Volterra said:

Angela is a formidable advocate and cross-examiner and clients are delighted to have her by their side.  She has many years of experience handling complex, bet-the-client international disputes for States and commercial entities on every continent.  Her work at the firm has spanned International Court of Justice cases, BIT arbitrations, government advisory work, financial services disputes, and the energy and mining sectors.

Partner Graham Coop stated:

Angela combines theoretical acumen with practical, solution-focused advice.  It is little surprise that clients have confidence in her to help resolve their most important legal issues.  Her promotion is well-deserved and a continued testament to the firm’s world-leading expertise.”

Partner Peter Flint said:

“Angela plays a leadership role within the firm’s elite practice.  She manages cases and leads teams of lawyers with efficiency and precision.  She is already generating new client work for the firm.  Her promotion to counsel is the natural next step.”

Partner Gunjan Sharma stated:

“Angela is a steady hand at the wheel, even in the most challenging circumstances.  She is one of the up-and-coming stars in this field.  Angela is admired by her peers and viewed as a mentor by the more junior lawyers in the firm.”

Angela Ha said:

Since joining Volterra Fietta, I have been honoured to help clients around the world navigate their most challenging and sensitive problems, from helping mining companies obtain compensation for expropriations to providing real-time support to governments during diplomatic crises.  The Volterra Fietta team’s depth of genuine public international law experience, clear-eyed approach to practical strategies and commitment to clients are second-to-none.  It is a rare privilege to be able to champion the rule of law internationally but at Volterra Fietta we do it every day.  I look forward to continuing the firm’s important work for our clients in my new role as counsel.

Angela holds a BCL (Distinction) from the University of Oxford, focused on public international law, and a BA/LLB (First Class Honours) from the University of Sydney.  She was awarded the Myers Scholarship and full academic funding at the University of Oxford.  An Australian-qualified lawyer, Angela began her career in 2011 in the international arbitration group of a global law firm in Paris.  She previously worked in litigation at a leading Australian law firm, as well as serving as an associate (judicial clerk) to a judge of the Federal Court of Australia.
