UN General assembly adopts resolution to improve coordination against Human Trafficking

On 18 December 2025, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution aimed at improving international coordination in efforts to combat trafficking in persons, reaffirming the need for a comprehensive and cooperative global response to one of the most pervasive forms of transnational organised crime.

The resolution condemns trafficking in persons, particularly affecting women and children, and emphasises States’ obligations to prevent, investigate, and prosecute trafficking offences, while strengthening protection and assistance mechanisms for victims.  It further calls for enhanced coordination among United Nations entities, Member States, and relevant international and regional organisations, recognising that trafficking networks increasingly operate across jurisdictions and exploit technological and migration-related vulnerabilities.

Building on the United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons and the Palermo Protocol framework, the resolution underscores the importance of information-sharing, capacity-building, and integrated policy responses.  The initiative reflects growing recognition that fragmented institutional responses have limited effectiveness against evolving trafficking methods and reinforces multilateral cooperation as a central pillar of international efforts to address human trafficking and related forms of organised criminal activity.
