We are excited to share another instalment in the “Volterra Fietta PIL Commentaries” podcast series

This insightful piece by Gunjan Sharma explores the foundations of public international law and its application to challenges arising from the rapid development and deployment of artificial intelligence.

Gunjan Sharma is a partner at Volterra Fietta. He is a New York‑qualified attorney who specialises in international arbitration, international dispute resolution and advising clients on complex public international law matters. Gunjan holds a Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law and a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (International Law, Institutions and Ethics) from the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He is currently ranked as a leading lawyer for international dispute resolution by both of the world’s foremost legal directories, Chambers and Partners and The Legal 500. In those directories, clients and peers describe him as “superb”, “strategic” and “invaluable”, noting his “depth of knowledge”, “fantastic drafting skills”, “very able” advocacy and “senior‑level expertise”.

Gunjan advises clients in large‑scale and complex international disputes. He has represented States before the International Court of Justice on numerous occasions and private entities in investor‑State arbitrations. He has also served as an expert witness on matters of sovereign immunity and public international law and practised before a wide range of U.S. federal and state courts.

Public international law governs relationships between States (and between States and international organisations) and plays a critical role in resolving major global disputes. As artificial intelligence continues to evolve and be deployed across borders, questions arise as to how existing legal frameworks apply to new technologies and whether they can adequately address the legal and policy challenges they present.

The Volterra Fietta PIL Commentaries Series presents perspectives from seasoned public international law professionals with significant practical experience advising and representing clients. In this series, the firm’s partners address selected concepts, principles, and developments shaping the future of public international law and international dispute resolution.
