EU Council approves first EU Space Strategy for Security and Defence

On 13 November 2023, the Council of the European Union approved its first Space Strategy for Security and Defence. The strategy is aimed at enhancing the resilience and protection of space systems and services in the EU. The strategy supports the EU Commission’s proposal for an “EU space law”, welcomes the establishment of an “EU Space Information Sharing and Analysis Centre (ISAC)” in 2024 and calls for a “classified annual space threat landscape analysis”.

The strategy also opposes anti-satellite missile tests (ASAT), highlighting concerns about space debris. In doing so, it references UNGA Resolution 77/41 of 2022.
