On 1 May 2021, Peter Flint joined the Volterra Fietta partnership. Peter had joined the firm over a year ago as a consultant. Previously, he was the head of international arbitration at Gowling WLG LLP and, before that, a partner at Barlow, Lyde & Gilbert LLP.
Peter has been recognised globally as a leading practitioner in the fields of international arbitration, litigation and ADR throughout his 35-year career. He has extensive experience in bilateral investment treaty disputes, representing both investors and States in BIT arbitrations at ICSID and other fora. Peter has also a broad commercial arbitration practice, having worked under all the established arbitral rules, including the ICC, the LCIA, UNCITRAL and the SCC. His experience spans the globe, including working with governments and private clients in central Europe, Russia and the CIS, the Middle East, the Far East, South Asia and Africa.
Peter has worked across a range of commercial sectors, including: mining; energy and the Energy Charter Treaty; government contracts; banking and finance; aeronautical engineering; construction; and telecoms.
Since joining Volterra Fietta, Peter has been lead counsel in cases around the world, including for an Asian mining company with an investment treaty dispute with a government over the expropriation of its mining concessions and for the Government of the Republic of Ghana in its defence of a claim for hundreds of millions of dollars in a commercial arbitration procedure. Peter is also one of the Volterra Fietta team that is advising the civilian government of Myanmar on the international law aspects of the systematic and targeted atrocities being committed by the military against civilians in that country.
