Volterra Fietta confirmed again as Tier 1 firm in Public International Law

Volterra Fietta is proud to announce that it has been ranked, for yet another year, as a Tier 1 firm in Public International Law by the independent The Legal 500’s 2021 Rankings.

The Legal 500 also recognised the firm’s leading position in International Arbitration in both its UK and Latin America rankings.

Founding partner Robert Volterra was again included in the “Hall of Fame” for public international law, which is the highest ranking for individual lawyers.  The Legal 500 also identified Counsel Álvaro Nistal and Senior Associate Gunjan Sharma as “Rising Stars” in public international law.  Partner Graham Coop, Consultant Peter Flint and Senior Associate Angela Ha were featured as “key lawyers” of the firm’s practice for their skills and work.

The Legal 500 rankings included significant client and peer testimonials, which confirm the talent and drive of the lawyers at Volterra Fietta and the firm’s commitment to its clients.

The rankings noted that Volterra Fietta “has a very high level of expertise” and is “unique in the extent to which it” specialises in public international law.  The firm was described as “very capable in complex cross border dispute and investment issues, sensitive to realities in developing countries”, “well versed on matters of arbitration” and “extremely well connected with its practitioners worldwide, including government officials”.

Robert Volterra was identified as “one of the leading investment arbitration and international law solicitors in the world”.  Peers and clients described him as “a consummate team player with unrivalled client facing skills”, who is “very knowledgeable about international law, particularly maritime boundary issues”, “paints an accurate picture of the situation and comes up with real solutions”, “combines high intellectual ability with very good practical judgement”, “spots the essence extremely quickly and provides very clear answers” and “also is able on the spot to provide the theoretical argumentation to support his suggested solution. The highest standards of professionalism!

Graham Coop was described as “a very experienced New Zealand barrister” and “a very careful lawyer whose judgement” is highly respected.

The Legal 500 noted that Álvaro Nistal is a “key practitioner” of the firm “known for his investment treaty arbitration work” and that clients had described him as “an energetic and capable lawyer”, both Spanish and English qualified, who makes an essential contribution to the firm’s “capability of dealing with Latin American issues”.

Another testimonial described Gunjan Sharma as “very professional” and a “future star in the public international law area for sure”, who is “quick and very easy in communication” and has “fantastic drafting skills”.

These rankings and testimonials confirm Volterra Fietta’s commitment to the highest standard of excellence, in a year in which the firm has represented clients from all continents in a wide range of bet-the-company and bet-the-country disputes, including before the International Court of Justice and both investment treaty and commercial arbitration tribunals.  The firm will continue working to offer its clients high-quality, practical advice, including by bringing together the best minds and most experienced professionals.

Robert Volterra said: “Volterra Fietta has been ranked as a Tier 1 firm in Public International Law since it was founded.  This reflects the unmatched skills of our highly-specialised lawyers, who practise public international law disputes and advisory work on a full-time professional basis.  The future leaders of the practice of public international law are at Volterra Fietta today.  At every level of experience, we have a fantastic team of public international law experts.  And we have fun.
