Volterra Fietta and King’s College London (Department of Geography) co-hosted The 2019 London International Boundary Conference

Volterra Fietta and King’s College London (Department of Geography) co-hosted another successful edition of The London International Boundary Conference (“LIBC”).

The fourth LIBC took place from 1 to 3 April 2019 at King’s College London.  The Conference was attended by delegates from all over the world and provided a unique and multidisciplinary insight into the complex world of international boundary and sovereignty disputes.  Delegates had the opportunity to explore topical issues on boundary delimitation and share perspectives on how to address them by attending panel presentations and technical workshops.

Sir Iain McLeod KCMG, the Legal Adviser, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, opened the Conference.  Dr Martins Paparinskis of the UCL Faculty of Laws delivered the keynote address on the topic of “International Boundaries and Third Party Settlement of International Disputes”.  Experts from Marbdy Consulting Ltd and Maritime Zone Solutions Ltd delivered workshops relating to technical and scientific aspects of maritime boundary delimitation and continental shelf demarcation.

The 2019 LIBC panelists were distinguished academics and practitioners from leading institutions from all over the world and from a variety of disciplines.  These panelists delivered presentations on the following topics:

  1. Physical and emotional boundaries post Brexit;
  2. Borders and mobility/Building fences and barriers on land and at sea;
  3. Topical boundary-related aspects of the Law of the Sea;
  4. The Global Commons and the Oceans/Beyond the 200m limit;
  5. The Curious Incidence of Islands in the sea; and
  6. Contemplating the Middle Eastern border.
